Back Alley Barbeque opened its doors in 2018 at 2591 Haddonfield Rd in Pennsauken, but owner Dr. Ron Jones had already spent years building a following before the restaurant existed. He got his start smoking and grilling at the Columbus Farmers Market and at Rutgers football games — the kind of hands-on, high-volume cooking that teaches you what actually works. That experience shows in a menu anchored by a house-made barbecue sauce Jones developed himself. The core lineup covers beef brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, BBQ chicken, and smoked wings, but Back Alley has never limited itself to straight BBQ — Friday fish fries with fried whiting are a weekly tradition, and beef ribs show up as an occasional special worth watching for. Southern sides round things out: chicken gumbo, mac and cheese, baked beans, collard greens, candied yams, and cornbread. The restaurant caught early attention from South Jersey food journalist Marilyn Johnson, who featured Back Alley in Philly Grub around its 2018 opening, and it's since been reviewed by YouTube food reviewer JL Jupiter — whose 397,000+ subscriber channel put out a video with more than 85,000 views calling it a genuine South Jersey BBQ destination.
